basketball UPDATE - wEEK#6:  12/19-12/24/2022

LAST WEEK RECAP: Boys Practiced Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri.  Girls Practiced Mon, Wed & Thu.

GIRLS TEAM GAME UPDATES:

Home Game vs Rocky Mountain Lutheran. On Tuesday 12/13 Girls Varsity Team dropped a home game 23-38. Tigers were led by Senior Lexi Aguirre with 12 points. Junior Hazel Costilla made a 3rd quarter 3-pointer, and Senior Diana Hidalgo scored a 4th quarter basket for the Tigers off the bench. Junior Alondra Chavira had a strong game on defense playing stout defense and rebounding, while scoring 4 points on strong drives to basket.  Sophomore Shaila Ramirez added 2 points. Coach Vu commented "We continue to look for more consistent offense, but as a team we played a really good second half outscoring (Rocky Mountain) 16-13. We missed a ton of open shots in the 1st half and struggled, but I like the resiliency of the girls and the way we came out of half time. Alondra was a leader and she continues to provide great defense for the team. We are a young team and continuing to build."

Player of the Game: Junior Alondra Chavira

Box Score: Lexi 12, Alondra 4, Shaila 2, Diana 2, Hazel 3

__________

On Friday 12/18 Varsity Girls traveled to Aurora to face Hinkley High. They dropped the contest 23-48. Cold shooting was the story of the game as the Tigers got great looks at the basket throughout the first half but shot only 4 of 35 from the field in the first half. Coach Vu states that "we had so many good looks and the offense for the most part was run well. We are learning, but it all comes down to making shots. It isn't easy on the road in high school but when we have great looks we need to make a few more shots.  We trailed at half by 10, but confidence is an issue that we will work on that as a team. We had a couple girls put a lot of pressure on themselves instead of just playing the way they are capable." A true bright spot for the Tigers was the inside presence of Junior Alondra Chavira and Sophomore Shaila Ramirez. "Both played big on defense against a tall front line for the Thunderbirds. Alondra finished the game with over 15 Rebounds, that is a lot and Shaila had 8 Rebounds and 4 steals and played aggressively." Shaila led the Tigers with 6 points. "We got some good work from Kayla (Junior Kayla Martel) and Michelle (Junior Michelle Valadez) who both scored in the the first half and were aggressive on both ends", but both were in foul trouble and fouled out of the game early in the 4th quarter. "Kayla and Michelle are learning that early fouls are hurting the team as they are such important pieces for the team." This is the last game in December for KIPP Girls varsity and the season picks up again in January for games starting on January 10th.

Player of the Game: Sophomore Shaila Ramirez

Box Score: Shaila 6, Kayla 4, Nicole 4, Lexi 3, Michelle 2, Alondra 2, Jasmine 2.

BOYS TEAM GAME UPDATES:

On Tuesday 12/13  Boys Varsity Team faced non-conference Rocky Mountain Lutheran. The Tigers led through each of the first two quarters and at halftime 19-16. After Half they surrendered the lead briefly before turning up the defensive intensity to outscore RML 22-10 in the 3rd quarter to take a 41-26 lead into the 4th quarter where they were not threatened. Final score was 52-36 Win for the Tigers to raise their season mark to 4-1 heading into the Holiday break.

Leading the wyt for the Tigers were Seniors Kamil Abdul and Kalid Sake (who was making his season debut) who each scored 13 points. Tigers had balanced scoring as Junior guards Ronaldo Sandoval and Saul Chavez add 8 points each. Fellow Juniors Adel Adam and Michael Giron added 5 points each. Coach Vu added "They had an injury in the 2nd quarter to their senior starter  and leading scorer which was unfortunate and we benefitted, but our boys picking up the defensive intensity in the 3rd quarter after halftime was the difference in the game." Adel had a big 3rd quarter for the Tigers, controlling the boards on offense and defense and scoring 4 points during the run. "Adel gets better every game and is gaining confidence. Kalid regaining his eligibility was important as we were playing without Elijah (Sophomore Elijah Arreola) who is a starter and was out with an injury. I am proud of Kalid and all the boys for their work in the classroom, and as a team we are continuing to build now most all our pieces are getting available." Senior Jackson Dinsmore is another player missing time due to injury. The coaches are excited about the continued development of the team as the holiday break begins. The basketball season resumes with games on January 10th.

Player of the Game: Junior Adel Adam

Box Score: Kamil 13, Kalid 13, Ronny 8, Saul 8, Adel 5, Michael 5.

In the early game of the night, KIPP Boys JV Team defeated Rocky Mountain Lutheran by a final score of  44-31 Win. This was the JV boys team's 2nd game of the season and of the 9 players that saw action, 7 scored. "The younger boys played hard and are getting additional game experience. JV games help and some young kids are getting the game knowledge built up that they need to prepare for varsity games" according to Coach Vu.

Box Score: Saul 16, Edgar 6, Jose 6, Nader 5, Adel 4, Michael 4, Fabian 3.

basketball UPDATE - wEEK#5:  12/12-12/17/2022

WOW, What a week!!

LAST WEEK RECAP: Boys Practiced Mon & Thu.  Girls Practiced Mon, Wed & Thu.

Last week KIPP Denver Basketball Boys Team had 3 Games & Girls Team had 2 Games, including our first Home Games of the season. JV Boys team played on Tuesday, and Girls JV Team played on Friday before the Varsity games.

GIRLS TEAM GAME UPDATES:

On Tuesday 12/6 Girls Varsity Team got their fist win of the season in a road game against Strive Smart. Tigers were led by Senior shooting guard Lexi Aguirre with 17 points that included a buzzer beater 3-point shot at the end of the 3rd quarter to give Tigers lead of 18-17 heading into the 4th quarter. The team closed strong in the 4th outscoring Strive Smart 13-1 to get the victory by a final score of 31-18 Win. All 5 starters scored in the game, and team defense was stellar. Coach Vu added "this has been some time coming for this Win and I am so proud of the effort ALL girls put forth. The excitement and celebration is what High School sports are all about and I could not be more happy for Lexi and the entire team."

Player of the Game: Senior Alexa Aguirre

Box Score: Lexi 17, Alondra 1, Shaila 6, Kayla 4, Michelle 1, Nicole, Jasmine, Julisa, Diana, Hazel

On Friday 12/9 Girls dropped a home game contest versus Addenbrooke Classical by a score of 15-36. In a Loss, Freshman Nicole Ricalday (who played in both JV and Varsity game back to back) started her first varsity game and scored 4 points and played good defense and led Tigers in rebounding. "The result was not what we wanted coming off a big win on Tuesday, but seeing players step up like Nicole did tonight with a starter (Sophomore Shaila Ramirez) limited due to injury is always exciting. Nicole has such a great attitude and though she is young she doesn't let her nervousness or excitement phase her." Senior Alexa Aguirre had 8 points, Junior Alondra Chavira 2 points and Junior Kayla Martel 1 point. Tigers faced a pressure man defense and struggled, but fought hard and competed until the final whistle. According to Assistant Coach Manny Torres, "Our Varsity Girls' effort was nothing short of amazing on Friday. Coming into a game where the opposite team had some tall players, someone who stood out to me was Alondra. She is an outstanding defensive player and is always making sure she has her hands up and shuffles her feet. I'm proud of her performance and look forward to seeing her role grow on our defense. Great job!"

Player of the Game: Freshman Nicole Ricalday

Box Score: Lexi 8, Nicole 4, Alondra 2, Kayla 1, Shaila, Michelle, Jasmine.

The first game of the night was Girls JV Team's first game of the season. Scoring for the JV Squad were Freshman Julisa Coria 3 points on a 2nd half pull-up 3-pointer from range, Freshman Jasmine Martel 2 points, Freshman Nicole Ricalday 2 points on a steal and a coast-to-coast drive for a layup, and Sophomore Shaila Ramirez 2 points. Others seeing their first extensive playing time of the year were Juniors Isabella Trujillo and Hazel Costillo, Sophomore Viviana Hernandez, and Senior Diana HidalgoAssistant Coach Manny Torres stated "I was really excited about the girls on our JV squad to get some playing time. A lot of our players played a major role in the game and learned how quickly basketball can change between practice and a real game. We have a lot to learn and practice and I'm looking forward to our next game!"

BOYS TEAM GAME UPDATES:

On Tuesday 12/6  Boys Varsity Team dropped a road game against Strive Smart despite an outstanding performance from Senior Kamil Abdul pouring in a game (career) high 28 points, scoring from everywhere on the court. Junior Ronaldo Sandoval had a strong game with 10 points, Sophomore Elijah Arreola 5 points, and Juniors Adel Adam and Saul Chavez 2 points each. Tigers led at half time 26-25, and were competitive throughout the 3rd quarter which ended with Tigers trailing by 4, 36-40. Strive Smart had hot 4th quarter shooting as Tigers faded down the stretch playing short handed with only 6 players due to injury. Tigers fouled late and gave up several layups while pressuring to end game with a final score of 47-63 Loss. Coach Josh Mall of Strive Smart stated "you guys are doing great stuff playing hard with basically 6 players. You guys look a lot different than last year and your boys played hard all 4 quarters." Coach Vu of KIPP added "I am extremely proud of the effort we put out on the road here against a very good team. We led at half and just couldn't do enough with just 1 sub. They made shots in the 4th quarter to seal it, but we were with them throughout."

Player of the Game: Senior Kamil Abdul

Box Score: Kamil 28, Ronny 10, Elijah 5, Saul 2, Adel 2, Edgar.

On Wednesday 12/7 Boys Varsity Team travelled to William Smith. Playing back-to-back nights the Tigers pressured the Eagles throughout the 1st half racing out to lead 30-14 at halftime. The Eagles fought hard to get back into the game with a strong 3rd quarter to pull game to a score of 33-31 heading into the 4th. The Tigers were able maintain their lead as the game went back and forth, finally pulling away for a 46-38 Win. "We played well early and struggled after halftime with foul trouble, but the story was WM Smith as I think they raised their level of play and started making some shots on their home court in the third. We missed free throws (1 for 6 FTs) in the 3rd to let them back in it. This was our 3rd straight road game and back-to-back nights, but we found a way to get it done. I think Ronny did a great job of leading the team down the stretch after we lost Kamil early in the 4th fouling out. We played some young kids (Freshmen Nader Adam and Jose Rios) who were not ready last night, but I am proud of them for stepping up and giving us some bench help we really needed" according to Coach Vu. Junior Ronaldo Sandoval paced the Tigers with 14 points. Tigers had 8 players score in the game.

Player of the Game: Junior Ronaldo Sandoval

Box Score: Ronny 14, Kamil 8, Adel 8, Elijah 5, Saul 4, Edgar 3, Nader 2, Jose 2

On Friday 12/9 Boys Varsity Team played their first home game of the season against Addenbrooke Classical at SWIC. KIPP Tigers used a half court pressure defense and pushed the pace early to take a 29-16 halftime lead. The 3rd quarter was a back and forth affair with each team making mini runs.  But in the 4th quarter Tigers turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions that led to a 6 point swing. The Tigers were able to hold on for a 43-40 Win as a last second 3-point attempt by Addenbrooke that could of sent the game into overtime bounced off the side of the rim.

"That was exciting. Not the way we wanted to finish after the strong first 3 quarters of play, but we finished and got it done. We played basically the entire fourth quarter without our 2 leading scorers in the game (Sophomore Elijah Arreola suffered a game ending ankle injury midway through the 3rd quarter and Senior Kamil Abdul fouled out early in the 4th), and we were rattled. We at times had 2 freshman on the court and had a few shots not go in, which I give a lot of credit to them for their defense. Their kids fought hard to get back into the game, and our kids found a way to get it done. We are building experience with such a young team, with over half of the boys never seeing high school or varsity basketball before. I am proud of them for battling hard and rising to the challenge. The willingness to compete was the most important thing, and each game they are gaining experience. Take Adel (Junior Adel Adam) for instance, he has never played a high school game and in a few games (the coaches) are seeing him mature right before our eyes and use his considerable athletic ability to control rebounds and he added a huge basket there in the 4th. I am seeing different kids step up every game." according to Coach Vu.

Player of the Game: Sophomore Elijah Arreola

Box Score: Elijah 11, Kamil 11, Adel 6, Ronny 6, Saul 6, Edgar 3, Nader, Jose, Michael.

The win ends a busy week for the KIPP Boys Basketball team with a season record of 3-1.

basketball UPDATE - wEEK#4:  12/5-12/10/2022

LAST WEEK RECAP: Boys & Girls TEAMs Practiced Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri (morning), Sat.

Last week KIPP Denver Basketball Boys & Girls had first games of the season traveling to DSST College View (Wolves) on Wednesday 11/30.

1st game for KIPP Tigers Girls was a competitive contest and the Tigers were led by Senior shooting guard Lexi Aguirre  with 7 points. Forwards Junior Alondra Chavira (5 pts) and Sophomore Shaila Ramirez (7 pts) were strong inside and on defensive end of the floor. Guards Junior Kayla Martel (2 pts) and Freshman Jasmine Martel (1 pt) were active on both ends of the court. Junior Point Guard Michelle Valadez was stellar on defense with 5 steals and handled ball on offense against tough man-to-man pressure. Coach Vu is quoted as ,"The final score (40-23 loss) was not a complete story of the game. Our girls competed hard and played for one another. Give credit to College View for playing well in the first game, but our young team really grew throughout the game. We do not have much depth right now, and they scored some late points as we tired a bit, but I could not have been more happy with the effort everyone gave. We will build on this game as the speed of the game was new to most of the girls." In postgame locker room Kayla M. is quoted as saying "We shouldn't be (down). We scored more points than last year in game and I had so much fun playing and getting to shoot the ball. Everyone played so hard. We had fun!"

This is the great attitude and a focus we have with KIPP basketball and we will continue that as part of Fundamentals of our KIPP Basketball Program. Have Fun and Enjoy Playing & Competing!  Also seeing action in Game 1 were Senior Diana Hidalgo and Freshman Nicole Ricalday.

Box Score: Lexi 7, Alondra 5, Shaila 7, Kayla 2, Jasmine 1, Michelle, Diana, Nicole.

The 2nd game of the evening saw KIPP Tigers Boys team come back from a slow start and trailing 10-22 at halftime to erase deficit for a 40-37 Win. Led by Senior Kamil Abdul (22 pts) the Tigers pressured DSST CV on defense throughout the second half leading to more scoring opportunities and going on a run to outscore Wolves 30-14 after halftime. "We made a subtle adjustment in our defense and our boys were more connected, 5 guys getting on the same page. It was our first game and we started off slow. But the resiliency of our boys showed and our defense turned it around for us and we started hitting shots." according to Coach Vu. "Saul (Junior Saul Chavez) applied good pressure up top against their guards and Ronny (Junior Ronaldo Sandoval) anchored our defense in the middle and got us lined up correctly. Jack (Senior Jack Dinsmore) and Adel (Junior Adel Adam) got more involved on the back end to help Kamil who played great the entire way despite his early foul trouble."

Late in the game with the score 35-36, Sophomore Elijah Arreola hit a big three pointer for the lead on an assist from Kamil. Kamil added 2 clutch pressure free throws to make the score 40-36 with 10 Secs left. Solid defense to close out the game left Wolves with just a free throw to end the game for final score of Tigers 40-37 to go 1-0 on the young season. Also seeing action in Game 1 was Junior Edgar Robles.

Player of the Game: Senior Kamil Abdul

Box Score: Kamil 22, Ronny 6, Elijah 5, Saul 5, Jack 2., Adel, Edgar.
